This week is our first online class, to start off we have a little activity!!
We were asked to write what we think is a graphic designer. My answer to that is basically someone who convey a message through visual imagery, so that it's easier to digest.
However, a lot of my classmates have a similar answer and he hope all of us could expand our mentality because in this course we were not just designer but we need to be a researcher,writer and many more.
A general idea/ purpose of this course is to encourage research or investigation (qualitative and quantitative) and expand the research through different media (new and traditional).
To further prove why this is important, we were shown an event called London Design Binnale which is an investigative design.
We were also taught graphicacy which is the ability to understand and use a map or graph. The 2 component inside this topic is Decoding (analyze) and Encoding (create).
Basically there is 4 element that determined a good info graphic which is Interesting (topic), Integrity (truth), Function (understandable) and Form (beauty).
If you can't already guess it already, the first part of our project is an info graphic.
Basically the theme of the project is very broad so we can do basically anything. However, there is something call the lens which is the focus of our theme. We were warned to pick a topic carefully since we are gonna stuck on this topic for 2 semester.
This week homework:
- Study "The Happy Film" by Stefan Sagmeister. Observed his research methods, process, outcomes and how his research communicate visually in the end. Present our observation on the following class (Thursday)
- Think of 3 topics that you would be interested on doing research (tutorial next week)
The second and third part of this course will be more focused on developing the project as an exhibition and many more. Besides, we have to create a website that will document all our process until it lead up to the final.
