This week I went to laser cut my tokens that I need for my project. I have an idea in mind however I am not sure whether I can execute it therefore I consult Mr Kevin and KC from FabU cafe for their opinion on laser cutting and filling.

Experimenting

I wanted to fill up the engrave part with color as I never done it before, but here is a few things to consider:

  • The power of the laser machine to ensure that the paint able to sit in and stay

  • The technique to fill in the paint (brushes, cotton swab or markers)

  • I tried out the paint method to fill in the paint at the workshop straightaway and it turned out great!! So for the others I am going to continue using paint brush and cotton swab.

Setting up the file for the setup

Consulting KC from FabU cafe: He explained to me a few things I need to take note when making the set up such as the type of materials, the measurements etc..

The sketches

All the parts

Rough idea of how it would look like

Problems I faced:

- As KC recommend me another type of wood (maple??), that matches the color of the 5mm wood the measurement of it is slightly more than 3mm. So, is really tight and I barely able to build the setup since it did not fit into the slits.

- Therefore, I have to use sand paper to smooth out the edges and loosen the gaps, and in the end it works!!

The final design (character board)

Unsure of which layout I wanted to go for, I asked my friends for their opinion and the majority of them picked this design since they say it's easier to read and look nicer.
