Today is our first GD in context class!!

Here is an overview of a few things that were discuss during the online session

1. The Aim

Based on what I learned, the general aim for this course is for us to develop a clear understanding on a subject through research, and create a project that could have an impact.

2. The Module

From what I know, the module is divided into 3 parts.

Which is Practice, Position and Professional.

It is split up this way because this course have part 1 and part 2, but for this semester we will be focusing on PART 1 majority of the time.

3. Learning Outcome

We were also brief on the learning outcome for this course so that we would have a better understanding on how our lecturers would grade us!

So I learned about what the lecturers would want to see in our projects:-

- research! (variety sources)

- how we apply our researches into the idea?

- how we communicate the message across? (media/message/methods)

- how we expand from our topic? (area of interest)

- how our portfolio reflect our own practices?

4. Project #1

I am AMPLIFIER

This is our first project for this class, and we are supposed to complete this by week 4.

From what I know, the objective is to shift the context of the message into professional graphic design. To get a better understanding we were shown a few example of protest that were done by other artist such as Gorilla Girls, Keith Haring and Fahmi Reza.

examples

I learned that all of this protest/ campaign have something in common which are:-

- A symbol (consistent)

- Loud (impact)

- Active

- Urgent

- Approach people

The topic that we were to research for this project is "How design is used to turn us into buying machine". When I heard about this topic, one of the things I think of is advertising. Advertisement could be seen everywhere, and the purpose of an ad is to persuade the audiences to buy.

On my own free time, I am going to look further into the topic by reading the brief so that I have a better understanding on this project. Besides, I would research on different protest done and take notes.

The outcome for this brief would be a GIF!!

An example, how the outcome would look like!!

5. Group activity

We were divided into 5 different groups, each of the groups are asked to discuss an article call the "First Things First 1964 Manifesto by Ken Garland". A few things we have to discuss is the main problem, what we have gained from this article, what we agree on and what we disagree. This activity is due this Thursday.

Conclusion

Even though today is just our first class, we already have so much to do...However, I hope I got all the important information correct and would be able to complete it all on time!!
