Semiotic: 50 signs

Writer's picture: TengTeng

From what I understand, there are 3 types of signs which is icon, index and symbol.

Icon

  • representation of a concept

  • similar resemblance to concept

Index

  • Indicator of concept

  • Implies on evidence

Symbol

  • Code for concept (need to learn to understand)

  • No resemblance

Here is my 50 signs activity, I try to come up with the icons by using connotes. From what I understand, connotes is directly depicting what you see/ literal meaning. I try to depict single, relationships and the different media.

Moreover, for index I try to come up with things that is not really the literal meaning but somehow relates to what I wanted to say. I find it hard to come up with index cause I am not really sure whether it is correct or no. I try to use wedding/ marital signs to represent people in a relationship. However, I cant really find signs to represent single people. I use logos of social media apps to represent the internet media and also a pair of eyes to represent things we watch.

Lastly, since symbol does not have any resemblance of the actual thing I try to use denotes to come up with my symbols. I try to think of any idioms or pop culture stuff to come up with the symbols. Such as, pringles to represent single people since people always say "single as a pringle" or A pair of swan/birds to represent "love birds" which is a term for sweet couples.

I use pop culture symbols such as the mickey mouse head to represent the media that we watch such as disney movies and etc. I also use memes such as the "forever alone meme" which is wide known for the young people (gen z or millenials). I also use popular romance novel such as "The fault in our star"

In conclusion, this is harder than I thought it would be especially for index and symbols cause I need to really think what could emphasize on the meaning without directly depicting it. I think I did misplaced a few of the signs. Besides, I also think I stray too far for the symbols category, after finishing it I only realised that some people may not know what it actually mean without an explanation.
