Pig 05049 is a communications design that showcases the products made from a single pig 05049. It took 3 years for the designer Christien Meindertsma to traced what happened to every single part of a pig and the total of products it contribute into making. The idea came around when she started to take interest in the raw materials. After doing her primary research she realized there's actually much more to learn. (Pig 05049, 2020)
“There are many steps between the raw material and the end product in modern commercial production. And because there are so many steps in between, the knowledge gets lost. For instance, the pig farmers also don’t know all the end-products that are made from their pigs because they just don’t know where it goes.” (The Index Project, 2020)
The project objectives is to focus on implications for conservation efforts. Educating the readers about products contributed to by pig farming allowing readers themselves to make connections and formulate opinions on this topic. (Meindertsma, 2020) From my perspective, I believed this is a mixed between both responsible and discursive design because it raise awareness on an issue, but it also earn profit by selling the book.
