Joker (2019)

The first movie that I look at is “The Joker” (2019) by Lawrence Sher. In the film there are 3 main colours used which is red, yellow & blue. Each of the colour represent something about the character. The colour blue is a representative of sadness or depression in the film. The colour red is the opposite of blue where it represents sanity, love and healing. Lastly, the colour yellow is a representative of his strength & resistance. The 3 colours are basically part of “Joker”, therefore in the end we could see that all these 3 colours come together as a whole in the final scenes. (Höhnel, 2019) From this, I learned that colours could be a way of showing the characters emotions & personality.

Black Swan (2010)

The second movie I look into is “Black Swan” (2010) by Matthew Libatique. The 2 most dominant & consistent colour throughout the film is black & white. White is a representation of purity & innocent, while black is a representation of corrupt or evil. The colours are used to differentiate between her two very different personalities which is herself and her alter ego. (Cabrera, 2015) Therefore, from this I learned that I could use light and dark tones to help me differentiate between two aspects of the protagonist.

White Black

Perfect Blue (1997)

The third movie I watch is “Perfect Blue” (1997) by Satoshi Kon. Although the title is called perfect blue there is one colour that is could be seen consistently throughout the film which is red. In the start of the film the colour is present however is not the dominant colour, but as the film progress red are the most significant colour in the frame. The colour red in the film is a representative of chaos & changes. As the situation get more out of hand, more red are in frame.(AnimeEveryday, 2016) Therefore, from this I learned that the colours could be used as a hint or manifestation of the character emotions and progression.
