This week, we are given the task to read a book called "How to Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul" as it is a sem break.
Based on chapter 8, it talks about how to promote ourselves as a designer. It discusses the different ways we could cultivate reputation & be recognised for our works. Here are some of the key takeaways I have gotten from the chapter.
"We must not confuse admiration and respect with fame or celebrity"
There is no guarantee of success or lasting regconition. However, the simple way to gain regconition is to just do "GREAT WORK". As if you do effective, original, striking works full of emotional or intellectual resonance we will eventually get regconised and be noticed. As great work would naturally be admired.
"Not as impressed with self-initiated projects"
Although self-initiated projects are great for one to explore & figure out their style, it would not actually gain or impressed clients. As most of the time clients have an eye for the great outcome of a real life brief. Thus, look at the paragraph below as they explain about the alternatives.
"Find client who will let you do boundary-defying client"
Although is hard to find client as such, it is possible to find client that allow more creative freedom. The clients recommended are such as charity or non-profit organisation, that way we are able to stand up for what we believed while still able to produce amazing works which is beneficial to our reputation.
"I regconised the opportunity to do some great work."
It is recommended to start by appraching subject & area that is usually devoid from good design. From what I read, I think it should also start by having good intention to help & beautify "the client" product or service as it could also be a good starting ground to get regconition as well.
"Opinion is split on design competitions"
The more mainstream way to gain exposure is through design competitions. As many required a certain fees to enter and it may seem like athelete in a race. As mentioned, winning a competition doesn't exactly mean you are the best. However, entering one can gain many intangible success in terms of opportunities & peer aproval.
"Professional organisations"
Another mainstream way to gain exposure is through organisation such as AIGA etc. As it can provide many support to designers in term of advices, opportunity, insights etc. However, most of the time it required some sort of fees to be apart of the organisations.
Show & tell sessions can provide invaluable insights into the creative process"
Attending conferences & talks are actually also another good way to gain invaluable insight into the creative process as is a place for designer to discuss & share. Therefore, it is always encourage to partcipate in exhibitions, shows & talk related to the graphic design community as even if we didnt gain regconition we gain knowledge and mix around with people of the same interest (that might even lead to some opportunites..who knows?)
"Habit of sending magazines details of your latest work"
Through what I have learn, the initiative to reach out to people or organisation is a great way to make yourself known and gain opportunities. As trying doesn't harm anyone there is no excuse to not give out a try as it might open new doors for us. "If we dont try, we will never know"
