Based on my opinion, Illustration is a form of visual imagery that could communicate a message across through different mediums. While Fine art is a form of classical art that showcases the beauty of an artwork or piece. However, I am still not really sure what is the connection between the both, so I did some reading on fine art and illustration.
Based on the reading I did; I believe both fine art and illustration is a form of art which is divided to both minor and major art. In Illustration, I believe that the artwork created have a meaning that could connect people from different lifestyle through emotions. However, in Fine arts, I believed that the artwork is created for a certain niche of people of same interest, appreciation and leisure. Thus, the target audience for both is different. (Ege, 1949)
Secondly, I also learned that an illustrator has to pay more attention on how people interpret or perceived an object through visuals rather than the skills put into it (Ege, 1949) . This is because, it will increase the perceptibility of the readers. However, wrong visual could also lead to wrong interpretation, so it is crucial to use the right visuals.
Thirdly, an illustrator has to be well-informed about the technical processes because most of the
artwork is for mass production or have a certain size limit, unlike fine artists their work is mostly not for reproduction and they could choose the size of canvas that they liked. (Ege, 1949)
Fourthly, it is known that illustrators get lesser recognition for their artwork when compared to fine artist (Ege, 1949) . This is because, fine art that are being exhibit are most likely not have any reproduction pieces unlike illustration which could be seen everywhere.
From what we learned about illustration in class, we did a small activity. Using unconventional materials to create an artwork that relate to our main brief.
At first, I was thinking about recreating a character face, but I don’t feel like there is a connection between the object and the character so I changed the idea.
In the end, I choose to create a briefcase. This is because, my idea is to come up with a character of a place that could reflect the lifestyle of people at Klang. The character, I choose is a working adult. When I was thinking about the accessories for the character the first thing that came up in my mind is the bag (briefcase style). So, I have decided to make it, because I believed the briefcase could also be the very first thing people thing about when talks about the look of an office worker. As mentioned before, right visuals will lead to correct interpretations.
In the process of making this, I need to figure out a few ways on how to communicate the personality of my character across through the bags by adding little details and texture.
For example, the bag cover, is made up of strings that are arranged to imitate the roof of the Klang Railway Station (my research location). I also choose to add the leather because leather remind me of Vintage items and bags, which could reflect on the personality of old and conservative thinking.

Besides, if you look at it from far it also looks like a house. On the inside, it is covered with pages of paper from the dictionary. This is because, it has many words, which reminds me of someone busy and have a lot of things on their mind and they are constantly thinking.
Some additional details are the scarf and straps. Both of this is inspired by the clothing of the character, which is formal attire. One of the qualities of formal attire is pastel colours and black long pants, so I thought about adding it in the bag.
