After last week's session of brainstorming I have a much more clear direction. Therefore, I started to work towards the project.
Research 1.0:
Cliche found in media
Popular tropes in media
Gender stereotypes of character in media
The portrayal of male and female in romance media
https://www.joinonelove.org/learn/gender-stereotypes-impact-behavior/
Influence of fictional characters on it’s audience
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1468-2958.1985.tb00071.x
Initial concept:
Mock the media for having such repetitive content, however after doing much research I figure out that the audiences don’t mind watching romance content even though it’s repetitive because it would always give them an escape from reality. (look at azizi survey)
Current concept direction:
Therefore, I switch my concept into focusing on how the media content itself gives such a huge impact on it’s audiences.
Data:
Part one: I found out that the influence of media on relationship and singlehood
Different media influence them differently
Results of the influence?
A) Give them false hope (false reality & expectation)
B) Show them the real side of relationship (truth of a relationship)
What exactly influences them?
From part 1, I found that many factors influence them
Example, different platform of the media also showcase different side of relationship
Instagram - more of the only good side of relationship, bombarded with stories of how much of loving couple your friends and family are
Twitter - good, bad, worst are all shown,(darker side of relationship) everyday single day there are sure gonna be having some kind of drama, tea or exposed
Part two: As I did more research in terms of the media content itself I figure out that the the media characters itself plays an important role
If we think about it, the romance media have created so many remarkable and memorable characters that we swoon after and love
So what part does the characters played to cause such a huge impact on it’s audience
Is it because of their appearances, personality, status, etc??
Research 2.0:
One of the reason characters play such a huge impact is because of the Importance of relatability of a character
https://www.theodysseyonline.com/the-importance-of-relatable-characters-in-entertainment
A character that have a higher relatability is possible to have a higher influence on it’s audience because the Character shares a connection with its audience
Execution:
PLAN A (TILES & CLICHE CHARACTERS)
AR/ VR
Laser cut
Print
(not continuing)
The level of AR/VR technology I needed to learn for this concept is too advance as I only have a couple of weeks to learn and execute my idea (using Unity, while I only know Sparks AR)
Therefore I tried to change and apply what I originally have in mind to an idea that I have confidence in executing it nicely.
PLAN B (MAP & RELATABILITY OF CHARACTER)
Laser cut
Print
Fabric print
(the updated version of my previous plan)
Since from my research I am switching my focus a little bit, so the execution here is not as similar to the previous one.
Flow:
Education
Educate them on the portrayal of male and female characters in romance media
How big of an impact the media have on its audience
How media character influence them (survey)
Common portrayal/ cliche/ stereotypes media have given characters of different gender
Influence = Relatability
Interactive
Going through the map, answering questions that would match you to your ideal characters
Finding out which character is most compatible and have the most similar qualities (relatability)
Data collection and showcase
Characters are pick through the survey I did to ensure they are generally popular and well known
Explanation of the different characters in the map, that talks about their individual personality in detail
Relating character to its audiences in terms of their attachment style, personality, how they love etc
Find out whether male or female characters are more relatable to its audiences
Or more specifically which characters is the most relatable out of all
Why map?
The reason I wanted it to be a map is because people always say they are finding love or searching for their ideal person. So, when it comes to searching we always used a map or some sort of things to help navigate yourself.
Therefore, with the map it is like a symbolism of “finding/searching for my ideal person” . However, the media subconsciously would change what your perception of an ideal partner is.
Example, when I were to ask who is your ideal person they would name me actor or actress.
Why does my project centre around character to showcase its impact?
As I want my project to have an impact on people viewing my work, characters in romance media are well known despite romance content might not be your cup of tea such as characters like Jack from Titanic. Therefore, I am thinking that using popular imagery might grab the people's attention and get them interested in my invision information piece.
Link research:
Purpose:
Find out which character is most relatable and have a higher influence
Educate audience on the portrayal of male and female in romance media, makes them aware about what the media is subconsciously doing
